I’ve been thinking about structure placement…which is a bit difficult without the actual structure in hand. However, I’d like everyone’s thoughts on this. I’m thinking of turning the foundry structure 180 degrees and putting it on the other side of the service track and running the overhead crane over the tracks. Seems like there should be some type of hoist to load cars and I don’t think I’ll have room for a derrick or something like that. Looking forward to this. **MuddyCreekRR** April 2020 Sorry for the photo quality…I am not a computer genius and I actually have 3 more photos I can’t get to post…working on that…first shot went up twice…trying something different with knots. I started with an around the room shelf layout and loaded it with my builds but I ran out of room for good viewing. If I had it to redesign I would take a few different things into consideration. I’ve found though that I haven’t run the trains in a couple of years. Maybe I just need a very small fiddle yard and take the rest out and put in shelves to display dioramas…or re-do the underneath supports to house display cases instead of storage. The boss suggests side by side, O’Neills still providing some recycled oil. I wondered about back-to-back (no one will know which side to look at). I might have 2 tracks between for a better view, perhaps a current, functional, branch line and a second, abandoned one. What think you? The problem is, to me, it doesn’t seem likely that RR right-of-way would have allowed such business proximity. I’ve yet to start O’Neills, procrastinating while I weather 200 Fast-Track ties and squint at 400 Proto:87 code 83 tie plates. **MuddyCreekRR** April 2020 Thanks Ken…don’t want to weather too much till I get the other structures at least started…but I did get it along to a certain point…the fact you like it makes me feel like I’m going the right way. Hey brownbr, the 180 degree turn and cross-track crane idea is very interesting. It might give an industrial train-yard feel to a scene decades earlier. In a way, it makes more sense than me piping oil (? Underground) across the track(s) from O’Neills to the Foundry. I’m planning my base to be 20x35” – hope that’s adequate. MCRR, your work is great - and fast. I asked Brett for a footprint for planning purposes and waiting on reply. It’s probably fair to assume that if the HO was 11x14 that the O would be about double that…22x24ish. Great work so far. **MuddyCreekRR** April 2020 Brian…I retired from the FD in 2018…still work with the volunteer department down here that keeps me busy enough…but with the Stay at Home stuff…all my side work teaching is shut down…so I am in the shop on and off all day…trading out on the yard work and house improvement stuff…I did slow down a bit…Brett…glad you approve my friend…still working on that other diorama I told you of…just wanted to switch up for a few weeks…I normally don’t post much here…as I am duplicating stuff that already been here…plus until I figured out the best way to size and post the photos…it never worked out…but rest assured…photos of the diorama progress will soon follow…And to all…as always…if you see anything I miss…or have a thought on a different idea…chime in…as fast as I seem to be going…this build will be over time as the installments arrive…Ok…back to the shop… **KKarns** April 2020 Now you have something! Fun part of the build when the walls start going up and you begin to get a feel for things. Corners and framing look nice and tight. Your stencil work is also perfectly done, worn but readable. All looks wonderful. Rick **MuddyCreekRR** April 2020 Thanks Brett…I got it figured out. I used to do custom paint work on cars back in the 70’s and 80’s and had used temporary adhesives to hold stuff in place to paint. So what I did…was spray just a little on the back of the stencil…and it adhered tight enough to allow me to do a few light passes with a matte white rattle can…the adhesive came off clean enough with just a little clean-up with steel wool…it also took a bit of the black paint…but I like the effect it left…I like the way it came out. Going to soften it up some more in the final weathering I think. The walls again are only lightly weathered with some chalk…final weathering later…The look I going for on this is a building newer than the Pattern Shop…so I want more paint…but a decent amount of wear…but maintained…going to do a taped together mock-up tomorrow to get a size idea and basic layout configuration… **brownbr** April 2020 Stencil work came out great. I see yours advertises hoist engines also…can’t wait for kit 313 with all of the hoist engines! **Joel** April 2020 Looks great! Nice crisp lettering. Just a suggestion but if you take a tiny brush with white paint you can erase the stencil lines like on the “O” the “D” the A’s and the "P"s. **MuddyCreekRR** April 2020 Thanks Bryan…I am now thinking of a whole complex in the area that I have set aside for O’Neills and the Foundry…The diorama I have in the works is going to include the Tractor repair and also the truck repair…and will be part of the whole logging scene that also includes the Sawmill and a small engine facility all on a peninsula module on the layout…I need to get busy…lol Thanks Joel…I just did a little work on that sign…and it does still need some cleanup… **brownbr** April 2020 Sounds like a great plan. I like the tip and may use it in the future. I received my kit a few weeks but I’m trying to finish all the projects I have started first so following this build is a great way to enjoy the new kit while I get caught up. Thanks for all the pictures. **MuddyCreekRR** April 2020 Just a word on how I did the stencil. I had not quite the results that I wanted with the stippling brush…it worked great on the large Blacksmith stencil…but I think the more fragile smaller separations in the foundry stencil did not hold up that well for me…heavy hand I guess……(I"m a a firefighter…I tend to smash stuff)…..that being said. I placed the stencil backside up…and sprayed on a light coat of 3M medium strength adhesive. I let it tack up for 10 minutes…then placed it obviously adhesive side down onto the wall and lightly pressed it flat. I then braced it standing upright at 90 degrees. I then immediately used a rattle can of Krylon flat white primer and made a few light passes…allowing the paint to flash (semi dry) for about 20 seconds…until I had surface coverage of the open spaces of the stencil. Don’t over do it…less is more in this case. Once you’re happy with the coverage…lay it flat to dry. after about 15 minutes…carefully pull up and edge and check your coverage. If it’s good…remove the stencil…slowly…if you want more paint…just lay it back in place and hit it again…just don’t put on too much paint…it will run. Allow it to dry at least 1 few hours before you try to weather it. I used a couple of light passes with 000 steel wool to take down the edges of the letters. Than a s Joel has pointed out…use a fine brush to fill in the stencil lines…any adhesive that stays behind…you can remove with a #11blade. I had a nice effect with the adhesive removing just a little of the black background… **SteveF** April 2020 Thank you for taking the time to detail the stencil application. I’ve had trouble in the past with stencils moving and keeping sharp lines. Try the method you feel comfortable with…I suggest that you try them both on a test stencil…it was probably my technique that didn’t work for me on the finer stencil. **MuddyCreekRR** April 2020 Busy in the shop on the tempering shed…once that is done…I’m going to do a quick mock-up of the 3 structures to get some measurements for the site on the layout…not gluing them together as that’s not called for in the instruction manual yet. Have done some minimal weathering…but will wait till I have all of the structures and details together to blend it all together… will need to wait till Installment 2 comes out. On page 9 of the instructions, step 4 of “Adding Details to Stripwood” says “Repeat and add these details to all of the pieces as described.” Does “all of the pieces” refer to the 5 or 6 pieces in step 1, or all of the 8" pieces of stripwood? I have not done the saw banding technique and have only done a few knotholes on other projects. Left to myself, I think I would put saw banding on 10-15% of the total boards and knot holes in 20-25%. Does that sound right? **Mountaingoat** May 2020 I would go a bit higher percentage of knot holes a bit because you will be cutting these into smaller boards, thus reducing the percentage of knots. The Foundry arrived. When opening the boxes I fell almost of my chair. What a superior quality. First, the packaging, the boxes are so beautiful, inside everything is so well protected ( post office people aren’t the most careful ones…) The color printed pages that go with the forklift, Brett, you outdid yourself… Again. ; . I am sure I will unbox everything many more times just to enjoy the content.
