Logging Camp Diorama HO Scale: TravisS

Thanks Ken. I will look back at your masterful Shelby’s! I agree. It just doesn’t look “right” to me. Maybe I will add some dirt and weeds and powder and see how I feel after a few days. No worries if it doesn’t work in the end.

Yes this is going to be a big one. Not sure where I’m going to put it! But plan on putting it on top of a bookshelf once I get the back set up (area behind the bunks and hotel.)

Getting to be a problem of storage for me as well. I am at 13 SWSM dioramas and have started the 14th!

“The Museum of Grunge” in Akron. Close enough to canton you can get the hall of fame in on the same day.

Fantastic Travis, really enjoy seeing your work. Love the fueling scene you are developing. Wonderful storytelling!

Thanks Brett! Always appreciate your comments.

What a magnificent piece of work, Travis. Gradually, everything is falling into place. I am eagerly anticipating how the scene will unfold.

Thank you JenS! Means a lot coming from you.

I have been out of my modeling office for a while as I traveled a bit for my other office but getting back in the swing of things.

I had a large space between the First Aide Station and the Hotel so I worked up one of Brett’s old “Mini Scenes” the Large Tank on a Platform and it fit perfectly. Thought being this would hold the oil or gas for the little service area by the hotel.

I also added a clothesline and water pump/barrel where the nurses could wash the bloody rags. Still working on making those rags look believable. And I may move the line.

you might also be able to see I have started to define the pathways a bit more with chalk and my finger this is a WIP.

Next big project is to put sculptamold on the hillside for the bunks and define the creek area while laying the ties to the end of the diorama. Started casting and painting a large amount of rocks so I can have my pic for this scene. Going to get to that point in the next week or so.

Thanks for checking in and, as always, any feedback, comments or tips for improvement are more than welcome.

Travis the details really add to the scene. Well done.

Thanks Curt!

The tank scene you added fits right in. Nice detail work on the entire area. The only thing I noticed was the rope between the two posts from above bends unnaturally to my eye. This just may be the photo angle but doesn’t seem to hang straight down. Also seems a bit bright white to me. Your work is so good, otherwise it wouldn’t be worth noting!

Hey thanks Ken! Yes, I noticed that too. Funny how the embroidery thread just does not want to sit right when you want it to… plan to go back to look over Main Street while the plaster dries on the Essentials hill and might rework that line completely. You know how these large dios go…gotta fix that, get distracted by that, notice this, etc, etc.

Yep, I hear ya Travis! Like I said, your work is worth the nit pick kind of review.

Coming along nicely. The tank is a nice addition. For my eye, the spillage on the top is too shiny. Perhaps toning it down with a little chalk. Not a criticism, just an observation.

The tank platform fits perfectly, Travis. I would suggest trimming the loose ends of the rope close to the post—it appears somewhat too long in proportion.

Travis, will running the thread through your fingers with glue on them work?

Thanks JenS and Curt. I will do/try both. Luckily I did not glue the posts in yet so can re work easily. I wasn’t sure of the placement either now that the tank is there might be a little too tight.

Travis, you’re doing a great job on this dio. Are you sure those rocks aren’t real?

Thanks Jim! The rocks were fun to paint/dye.

Holy cow Travis, you’re building an entire layout here. I can see where you might want to take a break. Two things caught my eye in a quick read this morning. One is the tool shed, the siding, color, and weathering are as good as I’ve seen anywhere. The second is the scene with the retaining wall, it doesn’t jump out at you, but does catch your eye. Well done and looking forward to your restart.

Ray

Thanks Ray! Appreciate you checking in. Yes, once I get that sculptamold on the hillside for the bunks, I think Essentials will move pretty quickly. Then just have to build the Loco and Service Shops. Easy peasy!
