HO/HOn3 The Machine Shop at Deer Creek By: Ken Karns (aka Dr. Grunge)

Ken, the stucco wall turned out really nice, the interior wall as well. I expect to see great work when I open your thread, expectations have been met, no exceeded.

Hey appreciate that Ray! I’ll be going over the details of how I did the interior of this wall in Minneapolis.

There will be streaming, yes? I would hate to miss it

Beats me?..don’t know that much about things as yet.

Perfect and the coloring couldn’t ask for anymore!

Jerry

Hi Jerry, thanks much. The use of pigments allows the application of different types of grunge, from dark and oily to dry, light, and dusty.

Hey AL, Ray let me know that there will not be live streaming.

A fine start, Ken! The tone you are able to get on the wood in your models is really extraordinary and, even if seen elsewhere, you’d immediately know you were looking at a Dr Grunge original.

Well thanks so much Travis and nice to hear from you!

Dusting off the thread here a bit. I have been working on windows for a good while and the reason will become clear once completed and posted. In the mean time, I have the scale template glued down and the diorama size final. I’m going with minimal extra acreage on this build, just enough to accommodate the necessaries. The diorama is 15"x16". Task at hand now is to layout what goes where on the interior. I detail my walls before glueing them all together. This allows for manipulation of the wall anyway I need to work on it. Below is an example:

This is one wall from my Logging & Tractor Repair Shed diorama. Basically all done before glueing the other walls together.

The paper template glued to the diorama base has several distinct advantages. I also deviate somewhat and glue the floor boards down before the walls go up. I allow a small margin between the last board and the line on the template for the wall. The small gap will then be filled with dirt just as whats between the boards of the entire floor. Having the decking down,. without walls, allows unobstructed floor detailing. Not how to do it…how I do it. Another advantage of the paper template is that I can sketch on it where things might go as a sort of mock up. In addition, I can start planning the exterior scenic and detail ideas with a good sense of how the structure will blend with the landscape work.

Template over 1" foam, over 5/8" MDF board.

Ken those details look amazing and real. Makes the ones I’m working on look like c**p.

Don’t believe that for a minute Curt. Be a good discussion at the NNGC in September.

Ken, the wall looks great. However, the sink is exceptional and in my opinion adds a touch of realism to the whole thing. The sink is perfect.

Hey Ray, that’s nice you noticed the sink, what a nifty 3D print from SWSM along with the water cooler next to it. You can just picture someone standing there washing their grungy hands! Thanks for the support my friend!

Will be following the completion of the diorama with interest. That picture of the wall is really incredible. I know your Dr. Grunge, but your grunge is to the right level, and the shop interior looks functional!

Glad to have you following along swissrail! Appreciate the support and kind words here.

The signature slimy sink! Incredible interior work.

No, no Travis…it’s not slimy, it’s grungy!..OK, maybe it is slimy, but I was going for grungy.

Thanks much my friend!

Ken I looked at the SWSM 3-D item pages and couldn’t find the sink?

Yeah, that wall is amazing, usual high standards there Dr. Grunge.

Curt: I will eventually offer the sink and associated details as a small mini kit but it is not yet available, sorry brother!
