A small detour from my work on my foundry. I found this old SierraWest kit on Ebay and although it’s missing a few parts it had the 2 major castings and ,most of the small bits. I’ve always loved these cars and am excited to try my hand at building these beauties.

Here is the first ;layer of paint and chalk. I had to make the tubes from some brass and plastic I had lying around and tried to match the original casting by eye.

A royal pain waiting for the oil paint to dry but I really lioke the rust effect on the strapping.

Second coat of rust on the water tank - much of it will brush off or fade as I finish the detailing.

I learned the rust effect from one of Brett’s kits. Apparently people didn’t like it but I love it. I use water mixable oil paint and chalk. If anyone wants a quick tutorial…

The rust effect on the wheel sets is dry and can be installed. I got trucks with brake detail so I am trying to add a brake wheel for added detail - no idea if this would ever have been prototypical but it looks cool.

Nothing new on these guys. I’ll leave the final dusting for when they are installed on the layout.
I have decided to try and build the Blacksmith car next.
