October 2022 in O Scale Builds
I was pleasantly surprised to find that the US Postal Service had actually delivered my kit to my abode without any side trips. Brett sent it out on 9/28 and it got here on 10/1. Amazing. I will echo Karls remarks on the details…they are phenomenal to say the very least. Sadly…I will only have tonight to work on some items before a little road trip south. I promise this build will have photos of my progress…I had already stated that I had in mind some minor changes in the kit…most you will need to really look for…I can’t and won’t deviate from Brett’s great design. This as all my kits are destined for my layout that is a logging road with a waterfront, a small coal mine, and supporting structures.
What I intend to do with this kit, is to combine it with other SW structures and details to make a lineside maintenance and supply facility. You will recognize the kits once they start to appear…but I fully plan on finishing kit #315 first and foremost. It will all make perfect sense once I reveal the following builds…I build my kits on 1" foam, and then fit them in like puzzle pieces on top of the 2" foam base sections reinforced with wood strips ( I’ll post a photo eventually) I run my loco’s on Dead Rail so no wiring issues. I plan on most all structures to have lighting (LED) also battery operated, and I try to detail most of the interiors.
So all that being said…I’m off to the shop to grain and stain…following Brett’s techniques…Look for photos in about a week or so…

Muddy, lucky you to already have your kit. According to the tracking I am getting my kit tomorrow. I too am going to need to make some adjustments to the build. The friend ‘s layout I am building this for is going to have it backed up to a steep rock wall. Therefore, most all the details will need to be on the ends and front. Looking forward to following along with your and Karl’s builds. I will also be adding my two cents worth as I build my water tank. Best of luck. Randy

the only thing i can think of that would make it better is if brett did a face time tour of the facilities. wink, nudge nudge, wink.

I think that if you put the tar paper on the outside of the studs, you could put strips of tar paper in the horizontal position which is probably the prototypical way.

October 2022
Since there are a few builds going on with this kit…I won’t post similar stuff…I will post my changes and stuff I feel is different…as you can see here…this is a choice I made to do vertical as to horizontal siding on the shed portion…this is not the final product…I’ve done no weathering and extra detailing of the wood yet…tommorow for that…I also did something different with the tar paper…as I was opening up some 3D parts from Brett yesterday…I realized they were wrapped in black tissue paper…and decided to use that…I think it looks pretty good…and it too needs some work in the way of weathering and detailing…but it’s started…

MuddyCreekRR
October 2022 edited October 2022
Ken…I wasn’t sure I’d be a fan of the process…but it does work well…gives good contact for glue for the siding. As for the vertical siding…I’m just not a fan of horizontal boards…I hope to get the rest of the walls done tonight and start the weathering and added detailing. As I look at the photos of the completed structure…a lot of the walls will be obscured by details…and I plan to only do knots and such where the wood will show. Thanks Brian Randy and Tom…I know I haven’t posted in a bit…but I will keep this going. Karl is covering the step by step great…so I will just put up some stuff. I want to point out again that I used the black tissue paper that Brett wraps the #D details in. I was working late in the evening…didn’t pre-paint the tissue in the kit…so I figured…why not try it…I think it works…
The other additions I have in mind are going to fit in with the overall module when done. I plan on including the Tractor Repair, Truck Repair, and possibly the Woodcutters. Maybe even the rigging shed. In the end…this will work into a 4’ long by 2’ deep section of my layout. I am also a big scratch builder…and in the back of the module will be a Crew section with a bunk car, kitchen / dinning car…and a shower car…all details in those areas will be SW stuff…

Got some more work done on the walls, first set of photos are the walls with basically no weathering…next set, some minor weathering and knot holes…then the tarpaper.

Good thinking Art, better to spend that extra time giving more attention to specific things that will obviously be seen.
You’ll know/have seen I did the same on my build, the basic generic aging/weathering throughout is done on all areas so that it all blends, subtle ‘specialties’ can sometimes be reserved for highly visible areas.

Here are a few shots of the stone work…just the initial coloration, still needs a little dry brushing and chalk work to show texture…and probably an AI wash to give it some more depth, a long way from done. I tried to just do the brickwork as per the manual…i couldn’t get the thickness of the mortar lines as I want them…so I will go with a different method. The paint was as Brett suggested, medium tan tones. but if you look close (lighting doesn’t really show it though) there’s about 8 different variations of 3 shades of tan. All saved in the cups from 5 Guy’s (good burgers and modeling supplies)…so I can easily touch up and dry brush from them.
MuddyCreekRR
October 2022
The lintels just have a base coat of a very light tan. Going to wait till I get the windows done to match up the tones better…
And now as I look at the photos here…I need to open up some of the mortar line that I filed too deep on the corners…no more work today though…

Just read Karls post too on the stones…keeping the stones the same color family as other stone structures in the area. I had wanted to use more gray tones as that seems to be what a lot of my “rock” in the area are…but I do love the tan and brown tones…Been trying to get more done…but other “chores” have slowed me…a lot…one last “duty” this evening…then I hape to have a few hours over the rest of the week to model…

After looking at Karls stone work, I’m going to add a bit of gray highlights to mine. I can adjust the stonework tones on my layout to include some browns and tans too, so there’s some continuity. More brainstorming than modeling tonight, mainly the lighting. Looked at the Evans Design sight…they now have gooseneck and industrial lights…ordered…now I need to wait for those before I go too far with the shed…I will document the lighting once I get that far with photos.

SSW water tank slight weather wall
A light wash with some AI, and some start on the mortar…once I get the mortar right…I will dry brush the brick to dull it down a bit and work in a bit of texture and depth…
These are the gooseneck lights I was waiting on…the sheild, wall plate and gooseneck itself are not attached to the tiny LED…I will trim the tube to fit…and the shield and plate will get a dab of glue once i get them painted up…Thats magnet wire…8" long…these are the ones Evans offers as HO/S scale…I think they are just about right…I just ordered an O scale pair just to compare (should have put on the initial order…oh well)
This is one of the pendants…that spec of yellow in there is the LED…they are a warm white…wiring is going to happen well before the walls get glued up…hoping to be more in the mood and have the time in the next few days…

so you removed the led and wires from the tube and cut the tube?? i need to do that to evan designs industrial lamps because they too long. how in the world did you manage to rethread those wires back through the tube?
MuddyCreekRR
November 2022
I haven’t removed anything yet…they come with all three parts loose…the light shade, the escutcheon plate that goes on the wall, and the tube. As I look at it…someone at Evans had to thread it thru…it is the tiny magnet wire too…so it may not be that hard. I will be doing it with the pendants for sure…I will post photos. I just ordered the larger ones (these are the small intended for HO and S scales. The parts will be larger, but I think too large for this structure. I have a bit to doo before I’ll need them…and my progress is already slowed down. I’ll key you all in to anything I figure out how to make them work. My plan is to run the wiring like knob and tube
OK…a bit better lighting…not quite the final weathering, going to vary up the brick tones a bit, but I will wait for anymore chalk until its ready to plant on the foam.

The stone and brick on that casting look fantastic, great job painting.
I’m trying to make my own gooseneck lamps for my Truck Repair without much success. Can’t seem to bend the tubing without it kinking. I tried to make a tubing bending jig and use heat but still no luck. I think I’m going to have to order some from Evan as well. I can make the pendant lights, but those goosenecks are very difficult.
I usually use 30AWG manget wire for my conductor but I have some 38AWG and soldered some LEDs to that. I can’t believe how much dimmer they are than when using the 30AWG. It must add quite a bit of resistance with the wire being so much smaller. I spoke with Dave at Evan Design, and he said the goosenecks are wired with 32AWG so hopefully they will be pretty close in brightness to what I’ve already installed.

November 2022
Jim and Art, Have you checked out the website? There is a tutorial under tubing section about how to bend the tubing. Threading wires through bent tubing is ALMOST impossible. I did it one time but it took about two hours. I then did the straight tube and bent the tube after the wires were in place. I then pulled the wires back a little from the straight end of the tube and used a cut off disk to shorten the tube to lingh. there wires were then pushed back out the straight end of the tube. I hope this helps. Randy

November 2022
There is a set of wire strippers out there on the market that have jigs for bending tubing. The wall thickness on the tubing used here is so thin, it will most likely kink before bending. The open middle area I have planned to either have my CHB Denver handcar or the velocipede on sunken into the floorboard rails…hence the floor having the 2 white slots open. Once I plant it on the foam base…I’ll add the rails…The shed floor is as per the manual…but the open area I extended out both front and back a bit…the front to almost meet the rails of the track…and the rear just a bit to reach the rails I’ll have for the repair area. I let them run long for now and will trim later…at least that’s my plan. There’s no wethering or added detail to the wood floor yet…hopefully I’ll get some of that done tomorrow. walls are not glued just “balanced delicately”…

Decided to work on the tank platform and water tank itself…mainly to start getting the tone of the weathering to jive. I went too dark on the tank…but I have a way to fix that using the dark areas to do similar to what Karl did. Never trust the label on any pre-made stain. It will come out ok.
Did a little detailing with some chips and gouges in the floor and the tank platform…and a little chalk toning…more will come as I start adding details…

November 2022
Thats looking so good Art,
I’m really liking the colouring of your deck/floor boards, that aged grey is a wonderful base for what you have coming for us to enjoy seeing next.
As for the tank being too dark, white chalk might be a good friend for you, now, i know, white may seem too stark, but if used judiciously it will pick up the base colour when rubbed in and get ‘grimy’ while also lightening up those areas you feel are too dark and take on the base colour while lightening it up and keeping the base tone.
The tank platform variations and colour look spot on, I look forward to seeing how you blend it into the tank when you get the tank how you like it.
Keep those great updates coming.

Wonderful progress. Love the way everything is coming together.
Never been a fan of the “pre-made” stains. You’ll get it right for sure!
MuddyCreekRR
November 2022
I’ve used the “pre-made” many times…I am a big fan of your chalk process and it is the one I use I’d say 90% of the time. I tend to use the other for small stuff and touch ups. The stain I wanted to use on the tank I used before…but upon examination I realized I have 2 bottles of it…and the one I used yesterday was way darker than the one I had used before. Lesson learned. Always test before you commit…That being said…I spent about an hour with a brass brush, and the rougher plumbers brush “removing” the majority of the dark stain. I still need to work on a few spots…and I’m going to try the white chalk to even out the color…I’m not unhappy with the way it looks now…any opinions? I will add some darker tone on the bottom similar to Karls tank…

Spent an entire day getting about half the shop area organized…including the work table. So to give you an idea of the size of what I’m going to do…I put the floor and stone structure in approximately the spot it should end up (not glued down… ignore the 2 dark boards where the rails will go one it’s installed) . There will be a mainline track almost all the way at the front…with a runaround track that will pass the front of the tank and shed…there will be a spur that goes behind the water tower…that will be a repair track that leads into the Tractor Repair…that will live to the rear and right of the shed. Directly behind the shed will be the Truck Repair, with the Woodcutters shed just to the right of it. I will have a few other scratch built structures, a few sheds (including a SW or two). This will mostly all fit on this 2x2 1" foam. Just the Tractor Repair will drift onto the next 2x2 piece to the right. That will lead into the area designated for the 5 stall roundhouse, Engine and machine shop, and a boiler repair facility. To the left of this module…with a stand of woods and a small bridge will be the Foundry and O’Neills. There will be a pennisula that will hold the Sawmill and a shingle mill. Yes…a whole lot of stuff. I am working on some change of elevations for this before I finalize the locations.

Thats alot of big ideas for such a small space Art. Do you have any of the structures done yet so we could see a mock up of the layout you have in mind for this area.
Looking at that pic you just posted the track will take up atleast a third of that area.
I love the concept and I’m interested to see how it comes together and fits.

I’m in the process of making cutouts of the floorplans of each…I have the Truck repair started ( next to finish ), and part of the Tractor repair (main building). That 2x2 space will have another 2x2 block added to it (not enough room on the table) were most of the Tractor Repair will live. I’ll be working on the location tomorrow as stain and paint dry…so that might give you an idea. It will be tight…I’m shooting for the concept of trains running close between the buildings like on the EBT. I build my layout like I do construction work…limited planning by the seat of my pants…I do appreciate any and all input to the layout of the structures.

Interesting Art how modelers approach builds. I never start a build while involved with another. I guess I get so engrossed in the current project I cant give another project the same attention! lol. I’m impressed that you can have several going on at the same time. Good grief, my bench is messy enough with one build!

Brian the All O Scale in Harrisburg Pa. April 1. I do a few clinics there and this is going to be a showcase for the detail work. The photos I post later I hope will give a better idea of this section of my layout. It will be a 4x2 section of my layout when done. I build on the 1’ foam…then attach it to the 2" foam that is the base of each 8x2 foot module. And it’s being built as a modular construction, Dead Rail (no wiring) hung on the wall, no section deeper than 2’. It will be set at 48" off the gound for variable veiwing. It will hang on french cleats, so when I move…it can take the ride with me…and with no wiring…it will just unbolt…where the foam panels meet…the gap will be either well hidden or the scenery (dirt) will be loose…not glued down.
Ken, I won’t say I get bored with a build…because I don’t…my first kit was the O sawmill that I started gees almost 8 years ago…maybe more…and I sopped that about 1/2 way into the build as I didn’t (and still don’t have the layout to that point yet…The other problem is when Brett comes out with a new kit…it’s like a squirel runs buy…I shift to that…get it going…then…well it’s a vicious cycle. I vowed this time to finish the Water Tank…and I will…then the Truck Repair and then the Tractor Repair…My biggest issue with this particular project is facing all of the “best side” to face front…the tank will be up near the front…Truck Repair best sides will be visable…and I’m going to curve the track into the Tractor Repair to see the most detail…

Ok…here’s the Nickel Tour…this is the mock-up I did last night to show both you…and myself…where everything is going to go ( as of right now). Things may change for some of the structures but I need to “plant” the Water Tank and Shed to continue on…

I cut out the elevation changes with 3/4" and 1/2" foam board (both occassionally available at Lowes) Right now this is definately where the Water Tank is going to go. It will get glued down maybe after midnight tonight…or tomorrow. I’m working on the wall details as I type ( paint is drying)…The track out front is the mainline…the Truck Repair will be up front, along with a warehouse I will either scratch or build from a kit I think will work there…In the back left (as you look at it) corner will be a small critter shed, and the Woodcutters shack…This loco will service this area along with the Foundry and O’Neills that will be on the module that will be to the left of this one thru a stand of trees…Far right corner will be a bunkhouse and office/kitchen…(someone needs to staff this area), with the Tractor Repair right in front of it. Between that and the Water Tank will be a coal / gas / diesel fueling area. Most of the loco roster will be oil or coal fired. You can see that the run around track that goes past the Water Tank also serves the Tractor Repair, and the warehouse will have a loading dock out the rear to the track. The stumps you see are potential trees ( need a cause for roof top moss and algae), I will also have a bunch of stumps in the final lanscaping as this area was previously logged and cleared to build what I am going to call Service Camp 3. There will also be a few sheds scattered about…(the Tool , Rigging and Dueling sheds) The track in the mockup is not the stuff I will be using ( Peco On30), and if you can see the red lines…there will be a small creek that will require a small bridge I’ve already built.
While I love all the SW kits…they are the cause of a conundrum…I can’t have them all completely visable from all 4 sides…I have to sacrifice a bit. I have the Tractor supply on a good angle to showcase as much as I can…The roofs on it, the Water Tank Shed and the Truck Repair will all be removable to expose as much detail as possible. And I will use mostly, if not all SW 3D detail in anything I scratch build…there may be a few “outsider” deatils I need that will be replaced when Brett offers them.
This is one of the reasons the sawmill will be on a peninsula so all 4 sides will be viewable.
Suggestions are welcome…I value your opinions as to how I’m going to do this…thing’s may and will move…but I need to plant the Tank…in the next day or so.
OK…Nuff for now…back to the shop to paint and weather details…

Ken it’s never this clean and uncluttered…but as I age disgracefully, I tend to set stuff down, and loose track of where I did…This only looked like this for about 5 minutes…I soon had the tank bands, clamps, door hinges, windows and a few other items I had sprayed dark gray (I seldom use absolute black as it is just that) spread out and I started on the tank bands, until I realized my last tube of gel CA was a rock. And at 10pm, I was SOL. so this morning I made the trip to HD and secured a supply and I am presently working on those. I did get the hinges on the doors and weathered, along with starting the windows which I had left until now. Its cold and raining outdoors…so I am in the shop…photos to follow…

Did some weathering with both paint and chalks…more needs to go on once I get things further. Thanks Karl…I hate working with CA…I spent a while removing a hoop clamp that I inadvertantly glued to my thumb…lol…I have a slight mod on the tank roof, I’m adding a small hatch on the roof for maintenance access, and a fill pipe into the tank that will come up on the back of the tank with a valve…also going to have a pipe that will exit the rear of the stone structure and go into the ground…(it goes underground to the pond up the hill) roof base and cone are glued up, shingles are cut…and tomorrow stain and application…I hope…

The hatch is a nice idea, access to pull out those dead birds and rats that fall in there and drown…
However, the kit already includes a fill pipe that runs up the tank , the kit also includes a globe valve and a handle, which is to be installed on the fill pipe, so I’m not sure about that being a ‘mod’ as it’s already included in the kit.
Keep those off-cuts from the angled shingles, they make great small scrap wood to go in the empty drums/barrels or just easy ground scatter as you can see on my build.
I look forward to seeing your roof as it comes together.
MuddyCreekRR

My bad…I did read thru the instructions…but I had forgotten about the pipe and valve…lol…I still will be adding a lower pipe though…
Another issue I will have is the fact that while the back of the structure will be visible from the sides and top…most of the details that go in the back will be not all that visible.
I’m still playing with a few solutions to that so the handcar repair area and other details are seen…I have time for that to be figured out though…I’ll come up with something

Well…I spent 6 hours in the shop today…got stuff done…minor glitch along the way…worked mainly on the roof of the tank. I too looked at the manual, thought I had read everything…except the template for cutting the angle on the shingles…I was cutting angles…but not following the manual…Brett too the time to delineate those angle for each row…but did I pay attention…nope. Well…half way up the roof…I realized something was wrong…I then went back…and saw the nice template…I was able to somewhat fix my error…but not perfectly…but I have a solution…Bryans moss…so, no close-ups of my shingles until I grow some moss…most of you will see the fopa.
MuddyCreekRR
December 2022
Ok…I told you I was adding an access hatch to the water tank. So here is how I did it. I decided to make the hatch like I’ve seen on hundreds of roof scuttles while working as a firefighter here in the northeast. Out of wood, covered with tarpaper and sealed with tar. So I started with a square of MDF, covered it with the same black tissue I used for the inside of the shed walls.
I then cut a measured square hole slightly smaller than the size of the hatch in the roof.
Next, I used scrap wood to act as a plug to hold the hatch proud of the hole a bit
Then I glued the hatch in place…
Then I shingled he roof…making my error…and realized I don’t like shingling a round peaked roof anymore than I did in real life ( I did roofing at one time). Once I got done…I didn’t like the way the hatch sat…it was too low with the shingles in place, so I cut another hatch out of MDF, just slightly bigger than the original, and glued that on top of the one that was already there, now it looked more like a real scuttle hatch. I added hinges and will do more detailing tomorrow ( I stopped at 0145 EST ) It looks the way I wanted it…now I just need to hide a few fopas with the moss…which I was going to plant anyhow…
brownbr
December 2022
I like the hatch. And you are right, moss could cover up any blemishes that you don’t like.
I’ve found a variety of critters over the years. Some in 1:48 some in 1:35. Usually when I get a batch, only about 1/2 are usable with the rest looking out of scale. Some neat stuff coming out with 3D printing. Do occasional searches and stuff will pop up.

December 2022
Thanks Ken…I saw a hand truck that was almost exactly this design as Brett made in the EBT shops with this coloration…the wooden handles and the black paint on the metal parts…a little more weathering will happen before they get “planted”. Right now I’m slowed down by the concept of how to move the details from the back side of the water tank and shed to the side of the water tower. Otherwise they would never be seen once on the layout. I think I have it figured out. The fueling facility that will be right next to the shed will get the oil bottle filling scene as there will be fuel tanks and a coaling deck. Even though I’m not posting a whole lot…there is progress. I have also made a few changes in my mind on the footprint of the module I previously posted…so for now I’m working with basically a 15" x 10" piece of 1" foam to build this onto…it will all come together as I move along…I see mare changes as it progresses…

Art,
This has been a great build and I am thoroughly enjoying your work boots on this build as well as on the 3D Printed Detail page
I had a pair of steel toed work boots I wore in the early 1960’s while working for the People’s Gas Light and Coke Co in Chicago. I vividly recall my first day on the job when our crew foreman, a very robust Irish lad, Pete, made a point on stepping rather vigorously on my toes to test to make sure I was wearing steel toed boots. Then he was off to a neighborhood pub for the remainder of the day as his work for hat day had been accomplished. Those boots got well tested and worn doing jack hammer and shovel work over three summers.
Later, Dave S. Tucson, AZ.

A few hours in the shop…got some stuff done…The lean-to shed is nearing completion…just need to detail some of the wood…and add some details…it will house some tools and drum…a few other boxes…we shall see…you can see the work trank with the hand car…it will have work in progress of deck replacement and it had a bad bearing on a wheel…and since the work area is moved…the oil bottle fill area will live over on the other side of the shed next to the coaling, sanding and fueling facility, which will be populated with a lot of SW details…it will be built right after the Water Tank is done…

December 2022 edited December 2022
The lean-to will also have a rear wall with tools and such hanging…and as you can see…a corrugated roof heavily rusted and worn…lots of clutter will be around the shed…hope to have the structures planted tomorrow…

The chipped yellow on the handcar is great and the old grey deck boards suit it perfectly.
That High boy is going to be a great addition.

After once again much mulling over in my head…I think this is nearing the way things are going to get glues down later…I also made a decision to increase the size of my layout room from 12’ x 15’ to 20’ x 15’ which won’t affect this module section, but will make room for more walk completely around space for the other modules, one of which will be the sawmill complex, loco service area (roundhouse and shops), and where I plan to put the O’Neills and foundry, which will be right next to my scratch built boiler and logging donkey shop (which will be big). And if that’s not enough…this module will change a bit too…but I’ll leave that as a surprise for later. So here are a few shots of the location, main line up front, spur to the maintenance facility ifo the water tank / shed…tthat facilitate me moving the hand car repair area to the side…the shed shot is just to see how the detailing is coming along…still needs some more chalk work…
OK…wrong shed photo…SW Water Tank Shed mockup

This…is going to get glued down tonight as I need to start placing detail stuff…I think the spacing is good…any input?..The fueling facility will be almost right next to the wooden shed…the track will turn inward a bit…and right behind this now (a change will be elevation with the track leading to the lumber cutting area ( Camp 7) )

No Kevin…I’m seemingly up all night…Think I’m going with that Bryan…just a slight mod in the landform that will be in the next photos…And you are correct Ken…I’ve been painting details for what seems like weeks…even all the ones I ordered from Brett during the year…figured I’d get a leg up…even started painting details from kits I’ve had for years…

Not as much done as I hoped for…but got a few solid hours into the placement of the water tank and shed section of the module…I have some stuff glued together the shed walls in particular…the rafters are just set in for spacing and I need to route some lighting wires…you will all be surprised at where the batteries are going to go…spending the day tomorrow in the shop, weather the track…plant some details…a little landscaping…moving in…
More photos tomorrow…letting the glue dry…

Just wish I had more time in the shop…been pulled away too much as of late…in the shop right now…actually working on the coal / fuel dock that will be right next to this so I can add some more track as I paint and detail it…not forgetting this build for as the glue sets on my coal platform…I am working on the lean to shed…and the lighting…a lot of details going to live there…
MuddyCreekRR
January 2023
Almost have the coal dock done…I need it to size up to fit in the fuel depot and the shed end of the water tank and shed…its scratch built…but is using one of the sheds from the Dueling Sheds kit…and sharing some details from SW kits…Thanks Bryan for the inspiration…photos later today…

The layout of everything is looking good Art.
You are making fine progress despite all of the distractions.
Looking forward to seeing which of the “Dueling Shacks” you used, that’s another of Brett’s great kits still on my list to build. Can’t wait to see your take on it.
MuddyCreekRR
January 2023
Thanks Karl…not too many comments on it…I was worried…Here’s what kept me busy for a few nights…this coal dock will sit right next to the water tank and shed on the maintenance spur…I needed to do this to see the spacing and flow from the water tank…just past this will be a sand house and fuel depot directly across from each other…then I can work on the high line and bridge in the back…I’m still going to have a few other structures in this module…just need to figure out where…
The dock is far from done…but you can see the concept and the manual jib hoist to load and unload the coal by bucket…the shed will go on the end away from the hoist and be shrunk down a bit…I’m doing the one with the tar paper roof…the other has another home in the fuel depot…
MuddyCreekRR
January 2023
It will get short walls to contain the coal…the other floorboards need to go in by the jib…a set of stairs and the shed just to the right of it also elevated a bit…but tomorrow…more water tank and shed work…

Not to worry Art, it’s looking good from where I’m sitting and there are a lot of ‘silent’ followers watching and waiting to see what you do next.
I know it’s hard to gauge things when you don’t get much feedback, but there are many checking in and interested in what you are doing.
Keep up the great progress, the nbw detail on the dock is a nice touch, as is the bracing on the jib arm.
Looking forward to the tank and shed work next.

Hey Art. Work flow is nicely thought out. Having the additional maintenance facilities in conjunction with the water tank and hand car structures makes perfect sense. So many nifty structures to construct your scenes around and provide interesting details. The saga of where the “batteries go” will have a following!

Didn’t want to slow down on the water tank…just needed to see the flow of the module in a place other than in my head…now I have the spacing…back to full efforts on the water tank and shed…The coal deck will have the SW Shed, and the sand facility will incorporate the Wood Cutters kit…should get to the lighting soon…as I just finished cutting and staining the shingles for the roof…and getting some details planted…
MuddyCreekRR
January 2023
Got a lot done on the Water Tank and Shed…shingles grained and stained…started gluing them down…have a few more things to do before I put up a photo…tomorrow…so while paint and glue were drying…did some more stuff on the coal dock…walls…a bunch of NBW’s…some weathering…mount the boom (waiting on a coal bucket) and it can wait on the shelf till the water tank / shed is done…
The NBW’s stand out like sore thumbs…a little chalk…and some coal…and it will look better…The shed will be on a platform at the end of the dock…small office for the coal dock and fuel depot…

I was doing a lot of this at about 0 dark 30 and I was 45 minutes into installing NBW’s on the back side that no one (other than me) will ever see…If you look in the background you can see the main roof in progress of being shingled…and a pile of shingles… (the roof will be removable), working on the lighting today after the shingles and then some work on the tank itself…

Looking good Art, the extra work always pays off in self satisfaction.
I noticed the main roof in the background and tried to zoom in for a better look, the colours and variation look great and we’ll be waiting for a better look when you get it finished.
0 dark 30 is when I do my best work… ha
The coal dock and hoist are looking great, I cant wait to see the “Dualing Shack” next to it.

That coal dock is a neat addition to the scene. You are incorporating a lot of interesting features into this module. Can’t wait to see it all come together. I like how you have weathered the floor boards on the dock, chips, and gouges, and nail holes.

I need to do a chalk weathering for the coal…and a little distressing of the wall boards…that will be followed by a wash of a gray / dust / dirt nature…I’ve just started doing washes offered by several different vendors for my figures and locos…still figuring them out…

Time in the shop has been sparse…but I was able to get a few hours in tonight…finished shingling the roof…have one hatch done…and a minor mod on the roof…I decided to make the ridge can to look like a tin cap…still needs some chalk and a wash…also need to do a bit on the edges of the shingles to make them look a bit older and worn…I also wrapped the hatches with tarpaper…and will add flashing around the hatch…want to try out something…stay tuned…

I bantered back in forth in my mind how I wanted to do it…I have seen many like this in the northeast, it’s an alternative to a wooden cap…just need to add some “tar” in a few joints and detail the shingles some more…and then…some minor moss growth…
