December 2025 in O Scale Builds
Since I finished my 3rd, 4th, and 5th builds that I entered in the contest at Pittsburg I have been working in my 6th SW kit. I got this kit at the Denver convention in 2023. As usual I have enjoyed building it and making a few changes to Brett’s great instructions. Since it was on the secondary market a few parts were missing. Some I bought from Brett and others I made do with things I had on hand. I did not post any construction photos as I was building the model. Following are some pictures I have taking of the mode. A few were taken during construction, but most are of the finished model. Randy

Looking forward to seeing the pics Randy but not sure if the forum is still unable to accept pictures. See Brett’s announcement at top of the Discussions page.

The box for the boiler house and mill engine kit

I’m glad to see this and look forward to watching this build come together.

Thanks Jim
Randy

I built mill engine and boiler house without taking many pictures during the process of building. And they were fairly far along in the build. The first one I will post is just after I installe the boiler in the boiler house. I painted the boiler black. The rusty weathering was then added. I have an old bottle of a product called restall. I coated the boiler with the liquid Rustall and while it was still wet I scraped rust colored chalk over the boiler to give it a mottled rusty appearance.

The next picture I will post is of the engine house roof. I know that Brett always adds cardboard roof pieces when lines to help with shingles or tarpaper. I personally have never liked to use these subroofs. I just like to try to build up the roof with rafters and purlins.

The first photo shows the ridge board and first purlin with the first rafters glued on. The second has one side of rafters finished and the second set being added. All the rafters and purlins installed is shown in the third picture

Looking real good Randy.

Love that rusty old boiler! Roof looks straight and true to me.

Thanks Jim and Travis. It was a fun build. Randy

As it should for a shoestring operation like this one. Thanks for the comment Ken.

Nice work on the roof. You even cut the birds mouth in the rafters, and the spacing on the purlins is spot on.

Thanks Tom. The bird bites are in the instructions so I can’t take any credit for them. I measured the length of the shakes and doubled it to determine the distance between the purlins. Thanks again, Randy

Randy beautiful job on the roof and boiler.

Thanks Curt. I enjoy making things a little more like the real thing. Randy

As I have said before on this build I did not take very many pictures as I was building the structure or painting the details. So now I will go around the finished diorama.

This first picture is a general front view of the boiler house and engine house. The next photo is a close up of the engine

Including the screw jack used to help keep the exhaust steam pipe level. The second picture shows the cylinders and steam intake and details on the back wall of the engine house. The next picture shows where Rich Rands sets when he stops by the engine house and has a cold one or two.

That is all for now. I will post more later. Thanks, Randy

The steam engine is terrific. How did you get the glossy bottle finish? They look real. Well done.

Curt, the beer bottles were Brett’s clear 3D printed bottles printed with a Tamils clear green X-25 and red X-27 mixed to make a beer bottle amber. The clear red and green dry with a nice shine. I hope this helps. Randy

Sorry that paint was Tamiya. Auto correct strikes again. Randy

Great detail work Randy. Really like the nice job you did on the belt tension. Well done.

The steam engine turned out GREAT! Love your use of details.
