SW Blue Sky Company Warehouse

Hey Curt,

Looks great. Wish I had known as I have a “SHELBY’S” stencil I could have sent you to use.

Hello Curt, I wouldn’t worry about the inscription. Perhaps you could trace over it with a fine brush.

Curt,

Wouldn’t worry too much about the dry transfer as the overall effect you got with the deep grain on the doors and the weathered look of the walls help tell the story of a really old and well used structure. There have been other posts on here that have noted the dry transfers dry out (?) after a certain time so don’t think you did anything wrong.

Looking forward to your next post.

Curt, I have not had luck with dry transfers either. It seems they have a life span. The wood walls turned out really nice! Lots of character.

Bummer about the dry transfer but it still looks great. You’re doing a very good job on this project. I can’t wait to see the AC Bulldog, that will be a great addition to the dio.

Maybe you can come up with some creative replacement that meets your needs? Make-your-own?

The front barn wall looks fantastic. The detail and grain depth/weathering of the wood is perfect.

I discovered that after about 15 years the dry transfer decals I included in my earliest kits dried out and did not work. This is apparently a common issue with these types of decals. That is why I stopped using them in my kits.

Morning Felllas,

I’m progressing on the Blue Sky walls and am at the point of adding windows and doors which is my project today. The Blue Sky rub off worked almost perfectly. I’ll post some photos in the next day or so.

Ken- Thank you for following along and thinking of me.

Jen- Thank you for following. My hand isn’t steady enough to do that. I can’t draw a straight line if my life depended on it!

Travis- Thank you for the transfer history and support.

Tom- Thank you for following and your kind words.

Jim- I look forward to the Bulldog build also. I looked over a Bulldog build thread last night.

ALCO-Thank you for your suggestions. It’s definitely something I’ll think of in the future.

Brett- Thank you for following. I thought the stencil that the Brass and Iron Foundry has works perfectly.

Good Morning,

Today I completed the Blue Sky store walls. The coloring is from:

Prep coat of A&I

Rusty Brown chalk 493-3119

RA

Mixed Gray 704.5 and White 101.5

Thinned A&I

The windows and doors were first sprayed with flat Kakhi then:

Rusty Brown wiped with RA

Ash Gray 439-3117

Box Car Red dry sponged from Micromark

Brushed Ash Gray

Jute dry sponged from Ceramcoat 04082

Light use of wire brush.

Reading ahead is using template C1 to start assembling Shelby’s walls. I hope I did the overhanging boards correctly!

Hey Curt,

Walls look excellent! Nicely weathered and great tonal variation. The window framing and door color and weathering mesh really well with the walls. Well done!

PS…Looks like that transfer went on beautifully!

Wonderful job on those walls Curt.

Jerry

Everything is coming together great, love the weathering on the clapboard. Very convincing!

Good Afternoon,

Ken thank you for the nice comments and I am happy with this transfer.

Jerry thanks for your kind words.

Brett thank you for your words of encouragement.

Since the last update I have attached seven of the walls and attached the barn roof cards. Brett was correct about how fragile the dormers are! I believe the barn roof card (main) was intended to be set in one piece, but I cut it in 3 pieces to make the geometry work. I added some extra bracing to stiffen the structures. On the 4th photo it appears the brace is above the wall but it isn’t.

Really coming together Curt! Nice to get to this stage when you get a feel for how things are shaking out.

Curt you’re on a roll. Everything looks great so far and I agree with you about the bracing— a little more never hurts.

Afternoon All,

Ken thanks for following along and your kind words.

Travis, also thanks for following the build and your kind words.

Since the last update I have placed the wooden stripwood sub floor on the barn’s previously installed thick cardboard insert. After it dried I colored it with a basic A&I coating.

I plan on doing different roof treatments than what is in the instructions. A shake roof on the barn and probably shingles on the office and store roofs. I’m not a big fan of tar paper roofs on large structures. I hope I’m not doing something wrong on the forum by doing this?

I’ve also attached the store walls and the water tank is sitting on the barn roof but not attached.

This is really coming along nicely. Great job

Hey Curt,

You’re not doing anything wrong…you’re doing everything right! Making a build your own by pulling in your own ideas and techniques is what makes these SWSM kits so special. Shake and shingle roofs…heck yeah, love to see it. That’s going to be a wonderful piece when done.

Shaping up nicely Curt, as expected. A little twist never hurts and you’ll be kicking yourself later if you have to stare at a roof you don’t like forever!

Good Afternoon,

Jim thanks for following along and your kind words.

Ken thanks for clarifying the forum my for me. I wasn’t sure how that worked IRT posting builds.

Travis thanks for your support and encouragement.

Since the last update I have placed roofing on the barn, office and store. The barn has shake shingles and the asphalt 3 tab shingles were left over from previous builds and I don’t remember who made them.

I also slightly lengthened the office and store roof cards from raisin bran boxes to make it easier to do the rafter tails and line up like the photos online and instructions showed.

Obviously, these aren’t weathered yet.
