O Scale Sawmill

Thank you Ken. It is really an amazing and well thought out kit, and great entertainment.

Another shot at catching up. Phots show the initial saw, live and dead roll, and the mixer placement. Also photos for the initial wall installation. When I put the walls up I had already installed the LED’s, I’ll cover the LED’s in the next post, but it had to be done before the walls went up. The process of attaching all of the headers is not covered, however it is very straight forward if you follow the template and sequence which are both comprehensive and easy to work through. I did spend an inordinate amount of time with the headers incrementally sanding to length and checking the fit for each one. I just sanded them to a point where there was a light press fit and they held in place. I think it was worth the time. I’m probably boring you guys to death, but very soon we can get on to the new stuff.

Ray

Saw and live/dead rolls in place.

Flooring complete, its a relief to see the live roll lever still intact.

Flooring complete, first wall up and LED’s seem to be working.

2nd wall

Repeat photo, but a pretty decent view of the headers

LED’s next and then on to the current stuff.

Ray

Ray that is outstanding. It’s a shame to put a roof over it. I look forward to your post about the LED’s.

Beautiful work Ray!

Curt, thank you. I’m planning on the roof being removable, not sure how I’m going to do that with such a large roof - give me something to think about.

Thank you Ken

This looks great, Ray. I haven’t started mine yet but your awesome build is a big help. Super modeling and the equipment looks outstanding. Great job.

George, start it, it’s a very satisfying kit. I would like to be able to build all of the equipment a second time, you learn so much the first pass. But, truly, you’ll really enjoy building this. Ray

Thanks Ray. I look forward to it. Take care.

Looks great Ray. We can all see the work you put in to those headers. Doubt you could get an o scale piece of paper between the seams!

Removable roof is ambitious but I am sure you’ll figure it out. Could also do a Chuck Doan and just…not roof a certain part.

Interesting thought, or maybe only one section removable, thanks for the idea.

With this post I’ll catch up to the point I initially posted. This is the first model I’ve put LED’s in. It’s been fun, but I’m not sure its worth the effort. I have a good friend, Ken Olson, who’s a genius with anything electronic, and thankfully he was willing to teach and help out. He built a variable current power supply for me to use in this diorama. Without all of the history the photos should explain everything.

Variable current Power supply, will easily power 5 strings of 5-6 LED’s.

I took these connectors, cut away the plastic to get to individual sockets.

I drilled the headers out so the sockets could be pressed in.

I ordered some lamp reflectors from San Juan products, drilled through to accept the LED leads, then tested before trimming the leads.

Trimmed LED in its final configuration, Lamp is a little large I think, but it grows on you.

Final configuration, I’m not sure I’m all that excited about it, but committed now. What I’m thinking is that after the rafters are installed I can go back and cap the headers to hide the wires. Thoughts?

Last photo is the wrong photo, but you can see the wires that need hiding.

Ray

Ray very nice. I feel lighting really brings a building to life, but I haven’t lit my previous 2 SW kits as they’re in display cases on the wall.

How cool is that!

Curt/Alan, thanks - I guess I’m still not a huge LED fan.

Ray

Well worth the effort Ray. I’m a big fan of lighting but have done only the very rudimentary. Your process here is above my pay grade for sure. Look forward to seeing how it turns out.

Thanks Ken, but this is also rudimentary, and I’m in above my head.

Be nice to Mr. Olsen and you’ll be just fine!
