October 2021 in O Scale Builds
So, after building another brass locomotive, it is time to get an unbuild SW kit out of the cupboard… A few are left and I decided to pick this one. The Railroad Camp. No special reason for that, they are all great. Anyway, as you would have expected from me, it won’t be a build straight out of the box. We’ll see what’s gonna happen. I can say that more of the stone walls will be seen. They are such great castings, but in the end more than half of them are hidden, so I will change that for starters…
Speaking of starters, here is the first wall , a wall of the office. Just to get in the zone…( as they say it these days…
)
Pics taken inside, so not 100% color correct… But you’ll get the idea.. ![]()
to be continued…

October 2021
Dear followers…
Dave, these pics are taken with daylight. NO altering in the photoshop !!!
And for the mitering, of course you can always f**k up, but with the cutting templates provided in the kit, (actually , in all the kits) one really has to be a dummy…
to not get them right. But yes, one has to keep his wits on these constructions. And I also use magnifying headset lenses.
And for the coloring, I’m going for that greyisch/silver/faded look. At least for the upper part, this part, of the office building. As you’ll have noticed, no knots in these boards. It’s not a barn nor a shed, so better quality boards were used.
Man, I love doing these kits… ![]()
ALCOALCO
October 2021
I enjoy hearing the artist’s “back story” that describe why they did what they did (it’s an office, not a barn).
Robert.G
October 2021
I want to give you another tip on how to make the perfect miter joint. When you cut the stripwood, you always press the wood fibers down a bit. Even with a new single edge razor blade. So this gives a minimal inward undulation which can give the impression that the seem doesn’t close. Even when it does. . At the back, on the other hand, this will give a, albeit small, bulge. Now if you connect these two backs together, they will fit perfectly. Of course you have to get the angle right, but the templates from the kit take care of that.
So far today’s lesson kids… ![]()

Robert.G
October 2021 edited October 2021
While the paint on the window frames dried, I worked on the stone building. This is actually the ground floor of the office building.
From the beginning, I was fascinated by the resin ‘stone’ wall castings. The first thing that came on my mind was “I’m not gonna hide these beautiful walls.” According to the original building plan, half of them are hidden by walls of connecting buildings.
So , for now I don’t have an alternative arrangement of these buildings, but I’ll work something out. I do have some ideas floating in my brain… Managed to do so with the previous build, The Blue Sky Company. So, no worries…
Here you can see a wall with the opening for a window, actually it wasn’t open ,but one that wouldn’t be seen in normal circumstances . I thought it gave me the opportunity to put in some planks . A nice detail..
So resin turned into stone… A short summary of the modus operandi…
After fitting the walls into each other, I glued them with epoxy. Then all the seems were filled with a kind of mortar. Then every single stone was painted with several tones of colors. I used about five different colors and with these I did all the paintwork.
When dry, a wash with very diluted Bitume de Judée. ( Asphaltum) And finish off with some chalk and pigment powders…
More later…

Here is the explanation of the Bitume de Judee.
Judea bitumen is a fossil organic material made up of hydrocarbons.
Provenance: bitumen taken from Lake Asphaltite, in ancient Judea.
Use: to be used as an ink or a varnish. It is diluted in turpentine to obtain very beautiful patinas on gold and copper in particular, but also on plasters or as a coloring agent for wood. It can be used mixed with wax (encaustic patina), or oil.
In small proportion in the wax, it can be used to reveal the pores of the wood.
I use it as a wash. Very diluted otherwise everything turns to brown. Look for it in the art suppliers / art-restorers department.
But I explained this a few times before… Same for the wood coloring… browse thru my discussions.
We should have an inventory of techniques and materials on this forum where everybody can add things . Perhaps an idea…
Would make it easier to look ..
Dave_S
October 2021
Robert,
Thanks for the response to my question about lighting. Different types of light can really effect colors and tones. There can be pretty dramatic differences between full sun light, open shade and diffused light. Takes some advanced planning to set up for these situations, take the photos and then evaluate which gives the best results. I am often in to much of a rush to do this planning myself.
For many years I exclusively did B&W landscape photography using a gray card and the Ansel Adams Zone System. But digital photography took all the fun and artistry out of it for me. Now I am very lazy and just use my phone to do the work.

The tarpaper is placed , not directly on the laser cut cardboard, but I placed boards first. Lovely detail seeing them through the worn tarpaper…
I also made the bookcase/shelves for all the papers/files/invoices etc. Yes, I know, eventually very little will be seen of that. That’s why I didn’t detail more. . Yes, the office building will be fully equipped.. ![]()

As you can see, I put planks on the lasercut cardboard, even on the very small overhang on the underside of the roof. All perhaps small details, but they do matter to me and they give the build just that little extra…
Like the previous build, The BSC, this kit are also three kits in one… These kits offer much more than first meets the eye. Great as they are, but there is so much potential in them for the creative minds…

outstanding, the texture on that tarpaper is amazing.
Robert.G
October 2021
For the tarpaper, I use paper handkerchiefs, like kleenex or similar. Of course you don’t want to use the edge where usually some kind of print can be seen.
I paint this with diluted Dark Grey from Humbrol. I believe that’s the same as your Floquil brand. ( Diluted with mineral spirits) This I do to make sure the paint penetrates the fibers very well. I don’t use black . ( The tarpaper isn’t new on my roof)
Then I hang this to dry , if left on the bench, it will stick and you will tear it apart when you remove it.
The structure of this kind of paper is perfect for imitating tarpaper. It is also soft enough to make folds and wrinkles or even damage it where it must look totally worn.
After it is glued to a base, roof or whatever ( in my case I always put boards underneath) with white glue. Not to thick so it kind of penetrates the prepared handkerchief. At this stage, you can shape it over, around the base.
When dry, I use chalks and/or pigments to give it the typical colors of worn , faded tarpaper. I even let some alcohol run over the surface so some of the chalks/pigments penetrates the nooks and crannies of the roof surface. Newly patched pieces can be a little bit more black than the rest.
Well, and then, it is a matter of perhaps color it some more here and there, add some moss or whatever you want it to look like.
Just painted.
Here the paper is hung against the light to see better the structure.
That’s all for todays lesson folks… ![]()

So, I am working on the office roof now. This great kit contains strips of pre-cut ( lasered) shingles in a sort of cardboard like material. Great stuff, but if you are crazy like me, you do want to go the extra mile , and go for the real deal and cut your own individual wooden shingles. There are only some 1200 !!! to do deuuhhh…
So that’s what I’ve been doing the last few evenings… For now , still glueing them on the cardboard but you can see what’s going on here… The lasered lines are a great idea to keep them paralel. Or at least that’s the general idea… I don’t want them to be
too neat…Weathering and working the edges is for later… I used walnut stripwood for this.

So here’s the warehouse. I decided to put it , as often seen, on a brick base. Makes it more interesting to look at also.
Not finished yet, but you’ll get an idea of where I am heading to.. The bricks are made of cork and placed one by one. The mortar is real fine cement and plaster. More weathering later.. This wall catches the rain. West side… ![]()

I’ve hit a snag on my Truck Repair build because this is exactly what I’m envisioning for the scenery but I have no idea how to do it. This is just incredible.

Jim, what exactly is the problem. Where are you stuck, perhaps I can give you some advice. If you like this build and it’s scenery, go and check out my Gallery Page. I am sure you will find some ideas in my previous builds.. And of course, all the builds of the other Gallery ’ Inhabitants ’ … ![]()

Robert,
I’ve only applied scenery material to one other kit, so I am very new to this. I’ve tried to apply static grass in the past, but it looked horrible. I have the Noch applicator and it doesn’t seem to work very well, I ended up with grass all over the place and made a real mess. The grass that got to the glue wasn’t standing up. I was very discouraged, so I scraped it all up and started over and did without the static grass. I would so like to be able to put in different textures and layers of grasses, but I think it’s beyond my capabilities.
You have such a talent for being able to duplicate on the model what you see in real life. I have looked at all of your projects and am blown away by what you are able to do. I’ll study them again and maybe I’ll get the courage to forge ahead. Thanks for helping.
