April 2020 in O Scale Builds
The Sawmill on hold ,for the time being, I started a new ,somewhat smaller kit. Smaller, but not less interesting , it’s the last one I have at hand here so I hope the corona misery will soon be over.

Anyway, whilst working on the walls, my attention was drawn in the manual by this little addition, The Outhouse. Holy sh°t, Never build one, my enthusiasm took the upper hand and I started Robert’s Rigging Shed build with this. Of course , and as usual, I deviated a bit from the manual. I ‘decorated’ the inside

I considered this as a mini diorama that will be placed on the final ’ ensemble’. As always final weathering, more specifically the grass and ground covering later.

I know, the roof is in need of repair, but nobody gives a sh°t…

I thought it would be a funny idea to put an old yellow pages phone book inside to be used for, well you know what. I only hope yellow pages were available at that time. If not, it’s a sort of poetic freedom from my side..

I know the photos are big, but otherwise you won’t see. …no, not that word again…

Love, love, love it! Incredible weathering of the wood and the vine is perfect. Even the yellow pages look tired. Rick

Very fine start to one of my favorite kits. It was the first SW kit that I built.

What did you use for the lichen. I like that a lot.

Fantastic stuff Robert. You never fail to impress. Just beautiful.

The wooden cable reels.

Now the thing is, compared with the ones that were cast in resin, which are perfect in proportion, I found the laser cut ones, cut in three layer plywood were too thick. Also on the top lasered layer , the woodgrain was perpendicular to the proposed boards of which the reel is made up from.

So, I decided to take off the top layer with an xacto knife and thus thin the thickness and also put the woodgrain in the right direction. MUCH better that way.
It would be impossible to carve woodgrain in a longitudinal direction in a board that has a transverse cut.
I also broke a piece of the underlying board so you could easily see that a side is made out of two layers. As in reality.

Anyways, I think it looks good.
The weathering was done over a painted base layer of grey acryl paint. The different colors were painted on top of this. Chalk powder to finish it up.

Did the top layer of the plywood separate easily or did you have to do a lot of scraping? The cable reel with the underlying boards is a really neat detail.

Hey Tom, with a n° 11 xacto blade it went off without any problems. I did carve the lasered lines so the cut went through the first/top layer. The fact that this is transversal wood makes it very easy to take it off. It actually breaks in little parts.

Great job on the walls. The knots are some of the best I’ve seen. Some others are like 4 to 6 inches. These look great, as is all of your coloring. I wouldn’t mind getting on a plane either.

The rest of the walls. I tend to leave doors open so when a build is finished, one can piek inside.

There are always so many nice castings in the kits that I don’t won’t to hide them or see them only when a roof is taken off. And on a layout or diorama , that doesn’t happen a lot…

Also, one must not forget that all you see in the photos is in reality MUCH MUCH smaller.

soon more..

OK guys, here it is. Robert’s Rigging Shed.

What did I do ?.. Well, I put a concrete base under the building because I wanted to make a small ramp for the reels. And it gave it some more height. I needed that because I made the corrugated area bigger so the panels had to start somewhat higher.

There is lightning inside. (pics later) No track yet because I want to put the two sheds, Rigging and Tool, together on a futur layout and it seemed easier to install track later in one go instead of connecting all the short parts of track.

The ropes, well I thought it was a nice idea.
Hope you liked this build and now enjoy the photos. It was a fun kit with nice castings (as always ) . To bad it’s done.. snif snif…

I don’t know about you guys, but I tend to keep the empty kit boxes with whatever is leftover. Not a space saving habit…

Now I can move on with the Sawmill…

Thanks for watching and the comments you made.

Outstanding modeling Robert.
I always love the natural look, colour and texture throughout all of your work, can spot it anywhere.
Your realism level is always among the highest, and the extra little touches you add to make it your own are always dead right.
Beautiful stuff.

Outstanding! The scenery and details blend right in so naturally. The rope is a great addition. Especially love the “moss” growing on the reels. Not over done just right! Thanks for sharing.

I’m not joking when I say I thought it was a picture of a real shed. Your modeling is superb and when you combine it with good photography and a carefully chosen background, you pull off the ultimate - is this real or is it a model? I don’t know how it could be better. Great job. Phil

There is nothing in any of the photos that gives away that this is a model in O scale. Amazing, Robert.

Thanks for including the link to this build in the newer thread.

Wonderful modeling. The realisim and artistry combined are fabulous. Just getting started on my build and like your idea of a concrete floor. Could you describe how you created it? I am thinking Durham’s Water Putty, but perhaps you had a better product, or just plain Plaster of Paris?

Robert.G
January 2022
Thanks Jim. It was a mix of plaster, cement and diluted white glue on a 3 mm cardboard base.

This method seems quite complicated, but reveals the high level of artistry and skill which you employ in your fine modeling and resulting realism. Great results. Thanks for sharing your build.
